How to Survive Each Shift

This Shift at Midnight walkthrough focuses on the habits that keep a run under control: screen customers carefully, prepare for hunts, and inspect the bus before you leave. A single doppelganger slipping through can make the rest of the shift much more dangerous. Don't rush service just because the station seems quiet.

Your normal work matters too. Serve customers, restock shelves, and handle assigned work, but keep enough room and time to react if a monster appears.

1Inspect each customer
2Serve and restock as needed
3Set traps near usable routes
4Keep a path to cover or a vent
5Check the bus driver’s seat before leaving

Bear traps work best when you place them before trouble starts. Put them where you can lead a threat through them, rather than dropping one after you're already cornered. Avoid letting clutter, boarded doors, or your own teammates block your retreat.

For players landing here from searches for Shift At Midnight day 2, Shift At Midnight day 5, or Shift At Midnight day 10, use this loop first: careful customer checks prevent problems that can follow you into the later part of a shift.

Employer Tasks: Fast Money Without Losing Control

Optional employer tasks have a 60-second timer and pay an extra $10–30 when finished. Take them when the station is stable, not when a hunt is already forcing you to run.

TaskFast approach
Kill cockroachesUse the Water Cleaner to clear them quickly.
Kill miceCheck every room. Shoot them, throw them into walls, or pick them up and toss them.
Clean dirty spotsSweep through the building in an order so you don't revisit rooms.
Collect forest meatGrab all 15 pieces, avoid unnecessary wandering, and return right away.

The cleaning task is easiest when you work room by room. For the forest task, don't explore beyond what you need for the 15 pieces of meat; the longer you stay out, the less time you have to recover at the station.

In co-op, one player can take a timed task while another watches customers and keeps defensive gear ready. With three players, splitting inspection, routine work, and defense is safer than having everyone chase the same job.

Monster Counters and Escape Rules

Each threat asks for a different response. Trying to fight every enemy the same way is how a manageable hunt turns into a wipe.

ThreatWhat to do
PhantomKeep it in direct view while backing up, then lead it into a bear trap.
DemonFind its special music box and completely unscrew the handle before it disappears.
Screaming CreatureShoot it at range. If it jumps, sidestep left or right.
GnomeShoot it whenever it appears to stop its disruptions from building up.
Main bossKeep moving, break line of sight, and use fire when you can.
Red CreatureRetreat toward the gas station and escape; don't try to fight it.

Phantom

The Phantom cannot move toward you while you are looking directly at it. The moment you look away, it can rush you. Walk backward while keeping it centered on screen, and guide it toward a prepared bear trap.

Don't rely on narrow-door tricks or other awkward positioning. A clean line of sight and a trap give you a more dependable plan.

Demon

When the Demon appears, your priority is the special music box. Find it, interact with it, and keep turning the handle until it is fully unscrewed.

1Spot the Demon
2Search for the special music box
3Interact with the box
4Completely unscrew the handle
5Return to your escape route

Finish the handle before the music box disappears. Once it is gone, the Demon cannot return.

Screaming Creatures and the Gnome

Screaming Creatures slow you down before using a long, straight jump. Kill them before they close in if possible. If one starts its jump, move sideways; backing straight away leaves you in its path.

The Gnome does not directly kill you, but it creates increasingly disruptive problems. Shoot it as soon as you notice it instead of letting those disruptions pile up during a hunt.

Main Boss and Ventilation Shafts

The main boss moves fast and can break boarded doors, so don't treat a boarded room as permanent safety. Use walls, furniture, and corners to break line of sight, keep moving, and retreat if the fight goes badly. Fire damages it.

Ventilation shafts are for short escapes and repositioning only. Stay in one too long and a large flesh creature will crawl in and force you back out. Enter a vent to create distance, pick your exit, and leave quickly.

The Bus Escape Check

Before ending a shift, inspect the driver's seat. An empty seat means you can use the bus. If someone is sitting behind the wheel, do not attempt to depart.

Trying to leave with a fake driver brings out the Red Creature. It disables weapons and ignores boarded doors, so fighting or hiding behind barriers won't solve the problem. Run back toward the gas station and focus on getting away.
